Am I eligible?
All employees of Shop.org member organization in good standing are eligible to run for Board seats. Essentially, any employee of a member organization can submit a nomination for himself or herself or someone else; however, Board members are usually senior level executives. Only one representative per member company may run for a Board seat.
What is the role of the Shop.org Board of Directors?
Complete details of the role of the Board can be found in the Board Charter.  The overall role of the 21-member Shop.org Board of Directors is to provide:

  1. Strategic planning guidance on the vision and mission of the organization, strategic priorities and major initiative
  2. Feedback on the membership experience
  3. Support of programs and services
What are the responsibilities of Board members?
Board seats are volunteer positions.  The responsibilities of Board members include:
  • Attend four Board meetings per year (half-day each - usually are tied to a Shop.org event)
  • Preparation for meetings - reading Board books and materials in advance
  • Responding to emails/phone calls from staff or executive committee within 24 hours
  • Serve on Nominating Committee in second year of term
  • Contribute time, leadership and expertise

What are the benefits of serving on the Board?
  • Each Board member is entitled to one non-transferable free pass to all Shop.org events
  • Recognition of their status as Board Member at Shop.org events and marketing materials
What are the key dates for the election?

  • March 25 - Nominations open
  • April 16 - Deadline for Submission of Nomination Applications
  • May 7 - Nominating Committee Determines Candidates
  • May 20 - June 14 - Voting
  • July 10 - Results Announced
  • July 15 - First mandatory meeting of new Board
How many Board seats are available in this election?
Four retail board seats and four associate board seats are open for election.
Can I nominate someone else?
Yes, you can nominate someone else. You can contact those who you think would be a good Board member, or suggest their name to Shop.org and we will contact them.  IMPORTANT: The nominee must ultimately complete the application and agree to serve.
Should nominees write their own application?
We recommend that nominees write their own applications.  We find that personally written applications better reflect a nominee's interest in and commitment to Shop.org.
What do I have to do to submit my application?
All nominees are asked to complete the application by Tuesday, April 16, 2013.
How is the ballot selected?
The Nominating Committee uses the criteria below for selecting nominees to the ballot.  Nominees are rated (see rating system below) based on how closely their application is aligned to the criteria.

Who is on the Nominating Committee?
The Nominating Committee is comprised of Shop.org Board members between the first and second year of their term. Current Board members running for re-election do not serve on the nominating committee.  The nominating committee includes:

What is the Application Rating System?
Each application will be rated using the system below. Ratings will be used to guide the decision of the nominating committee.

What is next after submitting my application?
Following the close of the nomination period, a Nomination Committee, composed of the returning Board members, will evaluate the nominations and select candidates.
When will nominees be notified if they have been selected to be on the ballot?
All nominees will be notified no later than May 10, 2013.
What information will be provided to the voters?
Shop.org will post the completed Nomination Application and a photograph of each candidate selected on the ballot on the Shop.org election website when the ballots are set. Each time the page is visited, the order that the candidates are presented is changed so all candidates get featured on voting page.
Who votes for Shop.org Board of Directors?
Each Shop.org member company has one vote. The ballots are sent to the person who has been designated as the primary contact/voting member for the company. Contact Sara Greene at greenes@shop.org if you are would like to confirm or change your company's voting member. Employees who are not the voting members are encouraged to share their opinions with their company's voting member about who should be elected.
When will voting take place?
Online voting will start Monday May 20 and end Friday June 14, 2013.
Are candidates allowed to campaign?
Yes! Candidates are encouraged to campaign through various social media vehicles. Please review the rules provided below.
What are the campaigning rules?
  1. Candidates agree not to participate in unsolicited campaigning via email, snail mail, phone fax or other methods.
  2. Campaigning via social media is encouraged and complete rules can be read here.
When will the results be announced?
Results will be announced on or about July 10, 2013.
What is the orientation process for new Board members?
Prior to the July 15 Board meeting, new Board members are required to participate in a telephone orientation that provides a basic understanding of organizational, financial and membership structure of Shop.org.
When is the first Board meeting for newly elected Directors?
The first Board meeting after the elections is Monday, July 15, 2013 in Huntington Beach, CA (at the Online Merchandising Workshop). In-person participation in this meeting is mandatory.
